“Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other. And in the home, begins the disruption of peace of the world.” said Mother Teresa about the hollow structure of the family today…unfortunately a stark reality. In the life and times of Baba, there is a quoted incident where Baba once visits one of the few houses he used to visit daily for food and alms. He hears the lady of the house asking her old father-in-law to wait for sometime, and that she would attend to him and serve food after she had given food to Baba, who was there at the door. Baba immediately corrects her and tells her to go and attend to her father-in-law first, serve food to him and then only come and give food to him (Baba). He further told her that giving food to him was only a pious action, whereas serving food to her old and ailing father-in-law was her duty; and that she must give precedence to her duty over a pious action. Thus teaching the world about how to behave with and care about the elders.
We at Sai Milan believe that if children are our wealth, the elders are our treasure. Yet there are so many people who for the sake of their own happiness and privacy ignore this treasure, and leave their parents at old-age homes. Old age homes may provide all material requirements but surely, an old age home cannot fill in the vacuum of love and affection that only a family can provide. But there is hope. have resigned to their lonely fate, with their children busy working or settled elsewhere. Or who don’t want to be dependent on their children and who prefer this than bitterness and loneliness at home.
It will be a home and all of them like a big family, who would themselves manage it, in the manner that if someone wants to cook, or do gardening, meditation, or keeping account or for that matter, any other piece of work that one finds interesting. It would be our endeavour to spread the warmth of a real home amongst them, to fulfil their anticipations and expectations.
